On April 21, 2011 Wildlife Habitat Canada hosted the 2011 Robert Bateman Get to Know Contest Launch at the
Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa.

In addition to W. Allan Hancock, the artist behind the 2011 Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp, the event
featured several guest speakers from various conservation organizations including Parks Canada, the Canadian Wildlife
Federation, Girl Guides of Canada,
the Canadian Museum of Nature, and the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Thirty students from St. Francis Xavier High School were in attendance to hear Mr. Hancock speak about how nature
inspires his artwork, as well as participate in a sketching exercise with him. The students also had the opportunity to watch
a presentation about the impact of habitat loss on wildlife from the Earth Rangers.

The theme for this year’s contest is “Forests” based on the United Nations’ declaration of 2011 as the “International Year of
the Forest”.
Canadians aged 19 and under are encouraged to get outside and ‘get to know’ their wild neighbours and then
represent these
experiences through artwork, videography, writing, or photography. These creations can then be submitted
to the contest for a chance to
win some great prizes, including having your image on the 2012 Canadian Youth Wildlife Habitat
Conservation Stamp.

Wildlife Habitat Canada would like to thank everyone who attended the event and encourage all young Canadians to
enter this great contest!
